Feel free to dig through the Deep Freeze for more, but stuff dated before mid-March 2005 is still formative and impressionistic, and not really worth the effort.

Lists: Record of the Year Grammy Winners, 1958-2004

Grammy Award

This year's nominees for the Grammy awards have been announced, and once again the nominees are dominated by familiar names like U2, Bruce Springsteen, Bonnie Raitt, Sheryl Crow, Stevie Wonder; none of whom produced their best work in 2005, or even close to it.

The nominees for Record of the Year are a little better, but still not very representative of any real trend in music: "We Belong Together" by Mariah Carey; "Feel Good Inc." by Gorillaz Featuring De La Soul; "Boulevard Of Broken Dreams" by Green Day; "Hollaback Girl" by Gwen Stefani; and "Gold Digger" Kanye West.

Rock 'n' roll fans have long known the Grammy isn't a rock institution; how could they be? "Hotel California" was the first rock record to be Record of the Year. In 1964, the Beatles had 19 singles on the chart at the same time, a good indication of their popularity; 32-year-old Petula Clark won "Best New Artist", and "The Girl From Ipanema" was Record of the Year (!!).

Here are the previous winners for Record of the Year; you could listen to the whole thing and never realize there ever was a such thing as rock music. And precious few of these, perhaps none, were in fact the best record of they year in any genre. Included for reference purposes:
