Lists: Major U.S. Record Labels
I've meant to post definitive lists of major and indie record labels for some time now; I can never remember who owns what. We'll look at major labels first; they're easy.
Following unabated consolidation in the recording industry that started taking place in the late 1970's and reached feverish heights in the past decade, there are now only four names to remember. The Big Four.
The Big Four now own 75% of the market share for music. In other words, a "major" label is a lot more major than it ever was. And the music you buy comes from fewer and fewer sources.
Here's a current list of the Big Four, and their current holdings, compiled from the company websites. Many of the held companies were once thriving, competing companies themselves before they were bought.
Sony BMG is the one involved in the 2005 payola settlement.
