Lists: New Orleans Musicians
![]() Freeway Jam, unlike most blogs, generally doesn't address current events; it has always been envisioned as a music-only blog, existing somewhat removed from the moment. There are bloggers far more able to post meaningful information and writing about the news of the day, and I leave the current events to them. However, I can't let the Hurricane Katrina tragedy in New Orleans pass by without acknowledging that among all the treasured things lost in a single weekend in New Orleans, not least among them is its rich and vibrant music scene. As the birthplace of ragtime and jazz, with a musical tradition dating back to the slave days, with its zydeco and cajun influences and r&b and rock artists too, few cities have contributed so much to musical history. In tribute to the city and unique culture of New Orleans, here's a list of significant New Orleans and Louisiana performers and their genres. Sunday morning edit: This list, compiled from several sources, does not claim to be all-inclusive, although it wishes it was. Feel free to add more via comments. This list includes performers from around Louisiana who at some point had a connection to the New Orleans music scene, a small number are non-native Louisianans whose greatest moments were as part of the New Orleans scene. Please share a word about N.O.; I'm holding off my weekend updates until someone says something... C.C.
