Lists: Woodstock 1969 Complete Setlists
![]() Just for the hell of it, I decided it might be handy to keep comprehensive setlists on-site of some of the key rock festivals. Woodstock is as good a place as any to begin, given its historical significance, and talent-rich lineup. To Recap: An estimated 400,000 turned up to hear big-name bands play in a field on Max Yasgur's farm near the village of Bethel, New York. About 186,000 tickets were sold and promoters anticipated that around 200,000 would turn up. When 400,000 arrived, overrunning the fences and barriers, the concert was declared free, which drew even more. Traffic jams eight miles long blocked off the area near White Lake, near Bethel, 50 miles west from the town of Woodstock. As many as 1,000,000 were on the road during the weekend attempting to reach the concert site. Police remarked on the overall good behavior of the throngs that flocked rural Bethel and surrounding areas. Rainstorms halted the show periodically throughout the weekend, but despite the weather, the concert was a success insofar as it showcased some great music and didn't erupt in any violence. Particularly legendery performances of the weekend came from Jimi Hendrix, Jefferson Airplane, Grateful Dead, Crosby Stills & Nash, Ten Years After, and Richie Havens. The Who went on record several times claiming to have hated the whole experience. Joni Mitchell, who wrote the song "Woodstock" had been invited to play, but didn't attend due to a television appearance scheduled for the same weekend. The show was scheduled for three days, but it actually continued all night on Sunday night; Jimi Hendrix took the satge at 8:30AM Monday morning. Financially, the concert was a disaster, costing its young promoters, John Roberts, Joel Rosenman, Artie Kornfeld and Michael Lang $2.4 million. They recouped some of that money with Woodstock, the 1970 documentary.
