Anyone For Tennis?

Cream --Eric Clapton, Jack Bruce, and Ginger Baker-- have announced that they will play four shows at the Royal Albert Hall, site of the famous "Goodbye Concerts" in 1968. The dates are May 2, 3, 5, 6.

Cream: Fresh Cream (1966)They've only played together once since then; at the rock 'n' roll Hall of Fame induction in 1993.

Freeway Jam has mixed feelings on this one. Clapton's been through a lot since Cream; Layla and George Harrison's wife; heroin and Tulsa Time; Phil Collins producing and getting 'sober'; MTV and VH1, his son falling out a window and television advertisement song placements.

He can't possibly be the same guy with the wigged out hair who played the blues like a guy on acid, who was known as "God" in those days, can he?

And then there's Jack Bruce; abandoned by God, pitching in the minor leagues for West, Bruce & Laing while similarly forsaken Cream producer Felix Papillardi toiled on bass with West and Laing for Mountain. After that, he was nothing in comparison to the glory years. Ringo Starr eventually put him in his oldies review, where he played alongside has beens like Peter Frampton, and the guy from Grand Funk Railroad. And, Ringo, too. He can't be that same guy with even wiggiered out hair who played blues like a guy on acid, can he?

And Ginger Baker, now 67 years old. Rumor had it, and it may well be true, I haven't checked, that Baker plays uncredited on Johnny Rotten Lydon's Public Image Limited album album. Whoever it is he sounded just like Ginger, crazy and busy and jazzy and rhythmic. Drummers are always the craziest; Baker always seemed a bit slow when I've heard him interviewed. What he's like now is anyone's guess, but rumor has it, he's still Ginger Baker.

So the analysis is: this can't possibly be good. But maybe it doesn't need to be. Maybe it just needs to be OK. They won't be around forever, after all.

Jim Capaldi, Traffic

Freeway Jam bids farewell to drummer Jim Capaldi, best known for his work in Traffic. Capaldi died yesterday from cancer at the age of 60.

Traffic was formed in 1967 by Steve Winwood, all of 19 at the time, along with Dave Mason, Chris Wood, and Capaldi.

Traffic started life as a psychedelic-folk outfit, and scored with Dear Mr. Fantasy, one of their most enduring songs. They broke up and reformed twice in the ensuing 7 years, releasing several excellent albums and evolving into a semi-improvisatory band, their songs stretching past the 10 minute mark, the band often improvising like jazzmen within a rock structure. The Low Spark of High Heeled Boys is their most realized work in this vein.

Among their other classics are "Freedom Rider", "John Barleycorn", and Dave Mason's "Feelin' Alright", all of which still get airplay on classic rock stations.

Capaldi had some chart success as a solo artist in the U.K. after Traffic disbanded in 1974. His biggest solo hit was a cover of Roy Orbison's Love Hurts.

Traffic had been due in the studio to begin work on their first album since a 1993 reunion, but Capaldi's illness put those plans on hold.

While Traffic may not be as well known as some of their contemporaries, their work ranks well among the top acts of the late 60's/early 70's.
