Searchin' For A Rainbow

I think I'm going to make search engine results that brought surfers to Freeway Jam a regular irregular feature here.

Alas, Google only re-indexes once a month, so the search terms that bring visitors here are all based on the very first few posts, which concerned themselves mainly with obscure 1970's artists. I don't want Freeway Jam to be stereotyped as a 1970's mausoleum, so the next installment will deal with contemporary music, or close to it.

Still, I can't resist. Here are two more shipwrecked collectors who stumbled upon this tiny little island.

Splinter: The Place I Love (1974)
This is the second accidental tourist we've met here in a week looking for Splinter stuff. As earlier noted, Splinter recorded for George Harrison's Dark Horse Label. Their best album was The Place I Love which Harrison produced, played guitar on, contributed backing vocals on (using about half a dozen aliases on the cover). Splinter itself was as anonymous as a band could get, so the overall effect is of a mediocre George Harrison solo album. Splinter's biggest hit was Costafine Town (peak chart position #77), a single from the album, which charted at #81. Recommended to Badfinger fans, but very lightweight.

This one is virtually impossible to find on p2p; a vinyl-to-mp3 copy of Costafine Town surfaced one day, but I've never seen it again.

Note to Warner Brothers, who distribute Dark Horse records: if two guys wound up here looking for this, maybe it's time to give it its first-ever CD issue? I hate to tell record companies what to do, but...

Minnie Riperton: Com To My Garden (1971)   4 hero: Creating Patterns (2001)


Electronica duo 4 Hero had a hit with Minnie Riperton's "Les Fleurs" in 2002. The two versions are remarkably similar; vocals are quite similar, and except for the drums 'n' bass bottom and the break in the middle of 4 Hero's version, you'd have a hard time telling the difference. Riperton is best known for her multi octave voice, and the multi octave 1974 hit "Loving You" She had also been in the late 60's psychedelic soul band Rotary Connection. She died in 1979.
