Gotta Serve Somebody

I've got jury duty this week, so I was thinking of what courtroom/judge/jury themed mp3's are out there.

So here's what I could think of, I only went by song titles; I've seen all of them out there on the network. My media-player star rating follows, (1-5 stars).

The Monkees: "Auntie's Municipal Court" A faux-Byrdsy country-rock tune. Doesn't really have anything to do with court at all, but good session playing and late Beatlesque production on it. ***

King Crimson: "In The Court of the Crimson King" Okay, wrong kind of 'court' and come on get real. But there just aren't a lot of songs with "court" in the title. Better than trying to include "Court and Spark" ****

The Long Ryders: "Tell It to the Judge on Sunday" The Long Ryders were one of the best paisley underground/roots rock/garage bands of the 80's. This one is a sturdy rocker with good sax for grit. Not exactly about a judge, but at least one is alluded to. ****

Moby Grape: "Murder In My Heart for the Judge" Vintage 60's hippie psychedelic soul-ish tune with a brief feakout guitar coda, one of Moby Grape's better later songs. Really about a judge! ***

Morphine: "The Jury" Morphine was one of the more intriguing bands of the 90's, blues-based but featuring no guitars; just a two-stringed bass, drums, and sax lineup. This song is really a speech fragment over a roil of ominous sax noise, pounding drum, and throbbing bass. Not exactly representative of the band's sound, but a good track if you like them. ***

Gerg Kihn: "Testify" Kihn is largely forgotten now, but he had a pretty good punchy sound in the late 70's-early 80's, not unlike Johnny Cougar or a poppy Bruce Springsteen but more power-pop than either. He only had two hits, and this isn't one of them. But it is very catchy. Not about testifying in court; a girl is more like it. ****

Eleventh Dream Day: "Testify" Another good 80's-early 90's roots rock band, with an approach somewhat reminiscent of Crazy Horse. Full of raving guitars, garagey sound, tough guy vocals. Also not about testifying in court; a girl is more like it. *****

The Rolling Stones: "Can I Get A Witness?" Okay, I know. Wrong 'witness'. Still, it's one of the better early Stones cover versions. ****


Well, that's all folks. I guess that makes a grand total of one on-topic tune. Sorry; apparently going to court is not the stuff of good songs. Had we been talking "jail" or "prison" or a "chain gang" it would have been a different story.
