This Ain't Havana

Speaking of the recently departed, and I hope to get off that soon, Johnny Ramone had a statue unveiled at Hollywood Forever cemetery, right down the block.

I heard it was going to be cool. I imagined Johnny in droogy guitarslinger pose, all disjointed angles and kinetic energy.

Sadly, it turns out the statue captures him only from the waist up; it sits atop a pedestal.

The overall effect is Johnny sunk waist-deep in quicksand.

Second Hand News

Offbeat cover versions I've encountered on p2p in the last few months:

Carleen Anderson "Maybe I'm Amazed" adds a little soul to Paul McCartney's original.

Sandy Shaw "Your Time Is Gonna Come" 60's Brit poptart turns in a credible cover of one of Led Zep's best lesser-known tunes.

Dolly Parton "Shine" I've always had a soft spot in my head for Dolly, despite being from New York City. Arguably an improvement over Collective Soul's original.

The Beach Boys "Never Learn Not To Love" I've always had a copy of this in one form or another, but it's also on p2p. This is the one that Charles Manson wrote. It's credited to Dennis WIlson, who bought Manson's credit. Manson's original song, called "Cease To Exist" is on his LIE: Love and Terror Cult LP. Redd Kross also has a cover of "Cease to Exist"

T.A.T.U. "How Soon Is Now?" I loved the Smiths' original more for Johnny Marr's guitar than Morrisey's overwrought vocals. This manufactured Russian club chick duo sexys up the vocals, and keeps the essence of the guitar part.

Foo Fighters "Baker Street" For fans of Gerry Rafferty's original.

Mazzy Star "Five String Serenade" Gorgeous version of the Love original. Actually, I didn't 'encounter' this one in the last few weeks, I've loved it for ten years. Just wanted to tip off anyoneone who hasn't heard it.

Gov't Mule: "30 Days In The Hole" Intense Humble Pie cover.

4 Hero "Les Fleurs" I mentioned this one in my first post here. Minnie Riperton's version is catching up in plays, but this version has the oomph of the now going for it.

The Ramones Acid Eaters album. The Ramones cover Haight Ashbury, and the revelation is that it's a perfect fit. The Chambers Brothers' "Time Has Come Today" was the highlight of an earlier album; here we get such natural fits as the Airplane's "Somebody to Love"

Joan Jett The Hit List album. Punchy covers of "Pretty Vacant" (Sex Pistols) and "Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap" (AC/DC) among others.

Rush Flashback EP. Released a few months ago, this 8-song sampler of 60's covers recasts Rush as the garage band of your dreams, or at least a much better garage band than you'd expect Rush to be. "The Seeker" (the Who), "Shapes of Things" (the Yardbirds), and "Seven and Seven Is" (Love) in particular are smoking versions.
