James Griffin, Bread

Bread: Bread (1969)


Getting on the bus with Spencer Dryden is Bread co-founder Jimmy Griffin, who along with David Gates had a string of hits in the early 70's until they split in acrimony in 1976.

Griffin died at 61 from complications from cancer.

Bread is best known for their melodic and somewhat naive soft-rock, mostly penned by Gates, and had a string of hits in the early 1970's. "If", "Diary", "Aubrey", "Baby I'm A Want You", "Make It With You" "It Don't Matter To Me" and "Guitar Man" were among them, each topping the charts during a brief 4 year halcyon. Bread's most enduring hit was the soft rock "Everything I Own", later covered by Boy George and Ken Boothe.

Griffin wrote a few songs per album, and was known as the more rocking of the two, in contrast to the more pop-oriented Gates. Their time together was rancorous.

While known for contibutions to Bread like the uncharacteristically heavy-sounding "Mother Freedom" (peak chart position #37), Griffin's biggest achievement was penning "For All We Know" for the film "Lovers and Other Strangers" Sung by Petula Clark, it won an Academy Award. It then became a smash hit for The Carpenters.

He dropped off the pop music radar after Bread, but apparently stayed working in country music.

Looking For Lewis and Clark

A lot of people who dabble with downloading tell me that peer-to-peer isn't worth it because it only has popular stuff, and not much obscure stuff.

That's a really newbie thing to say. In the past two years, I've been able to locate all but about two dozen tracks that I've ever liked, cared about, or ever remotely wanted to hear again. Much of what I've located is out of print, obscurro, or cult stuff.

Peer to peer 101 tells us: a search by album title rather than artist name or song title will yield better results. Not sure what album a title appears on? Look it up at Allmusic. Search by artist is your worst search method for popular or prolific artists, returning only the most popular titles which have often been mislabled through multiple copies.

Search by album often returns complete albums, or at least parts of albums with their original tags and cover art intact.

Better to search "Surrealistic Pillow" than "Jefferson Airplane" if you're looking for "She Has Funny Cars"

Certain keywords will help you find the rare nuggets too. These can be entered alone or in tandem with a name or title. Some of my favorite p2p keywords are: live, rare, bootleg, soundboard, in concert, bonus, extended, vinyl, promo, demo, acetate, unreleased, BBC, alternate, original version, B-side, rehearsal, studio, stadium, remix, audience, quality, greatest, best, cover, single, collection, box, recording, instrumental, rarities, master, albumwrap, unplugged, acoustic, VH1, MTV, storytellers, nuggets, pebbles

Stay away from "advance" or "advanced" as a keyword. Stuff labled 'advance copy' is usually either a bogus file or, worse, some kind of snoopware or trojan.

Other good keywords are venues: MSG, Wembley, Candlestick, Forum, Monterey, Big Sur, Live Aid, Atlanta, Toronto, etc.

Dates are good, too: 1977, 1978, 1979, etc. Live + date yields interesting results: live 1977, live 1978, live 1979, etc. 4-digit dates and 2-digit dates yield different results; e.g. live 77, live 78 are worth searching, too.

Searching by genre is very hit or miss, because genre tags are more often wrong than right. (Hey downloaders: Devo is not 'blues'!) Not worth the effort, unless all other means have failed.

Nothing rare on P2P? Where'd you think I finally found "Liberation Special" by Elephant's Memory? A record store?
