3/5 of a Mile in 10 Seconds

A tip of the hat to Spencer Dryden, drummer for Jefferson Airplane during their halcyon years, 1967-1970. Dryden died at home January 12th of stomach cancer; he was 66.
Dryden was a good, jazzy drummer who worked well with guitarist Jorma Kaukonen and bassist Jack Casady in creating the Airplane's signature psychedelic instrumental attack. In the 1970's, he drummed for New Riders of the Purple Sage, a doper-folkie unit not known for its rhythm section. After that, he largely dropped from sight.

I've always been a big-time Jefferson Airplane freak. Newbies should start with the
Surrealistic Pillow and
Volunteers albums, although I'm partial to the live
Bless It's Pointed Little Head. Good Dryden dumming can be heard on "She Has Funny Cars" from
Surrealistic Pillow.
I mention him today primarily because of the horrible luck the poor guy seemed to have in the last years of his life. He had recently had hip-replacement surgery and was awaiting a second one. He was also awaiting heart surgery. His house burned down in November 2003 and he was recently diagnosed with the stomach cancer that killed him. A recent benefit concert raised $36,000 for him, which is unlikely to have gone far.
Jefferson Airplane was perhaps the very last Woodstock band left that hadn't yet had a member die prematurely. Rock 'n' roll heaven is starting to sound a lot like Haight Ashbury in the Summer of Love.
