Music Business: Asking Prices
![]() Hope I don't get into trouble for this, but it is kind of interesting on a lot of levels and thought I'd pass it on. While looking for some artist websites, I came across Mars Talent Agency, Inc.'s website and quotes for their roster of talent, which is an interesting eclectic tour of the 50's through 80's, all available for your next engagement. The prices are posted publicly at their website. If you live along their route, which is their regular touring corridor, you get a discount. Actual cost can be higher or lower than quotes depending on airfare and location. How realistic are the quotes? Probably fairly, as starting points. The site is in the business of promoting these artists, and many of these artists rely on bookings for their livelihood, although some aren't actively touring. It is an interesting list (and website) in a lot of ways. And in addition to hiring one performer, you can put together your own little package, mixing and matching them, which often discounts the price. Think of the possibilities. The riders page is good reading too (and mandatory reading unless you want pissed off musicians playing for you). You have to supply the backing musicians, otherwise it'll be another $1,000 - $1,500, and they'll send a couple. (Prices quoted are all for "Normal Rates"; route quotes are about 25% lower.) Warrant: $10,000. The Band: $20,000 (Minus Robertson, and the deceased Manuel and Danko) Big Brother and the Holding Co.: $8,500 (Minus Janis Joplin, of course) Air Supply: $35,000 (the duo) Mark Farner: $20,000 (Grand Funk Railroad) Weird Al Yankovic: $100,000 (Highest priced rock/pop act on the list) The Supremes Starring Mary Wilson: $25,000 Lee Ann Womack: $140,000 (In the country category; highest on all the lists) Great White $9,000 Paul Rodgers: $65,000 (Of Bad Company and the Firm, may be busy now heading Queen) Five Man Electrical Band: $7,500 (Hit with "Signs") The Fixx: $10,000 Lou Gramm: $35,000 (Foreigner) Loverboy: $25,000 KC & The Sunshine Band $65,000 (Probably just KC and helpmates) Mickey Dolenz $20,000 (Monkees) Davy Jones $25,000 (Monkees) Shoe Suede Blue with Peter Tork: $7,500 (Monkees) Maxine Nightingale: $5,000 ("Right Back Where We Started From") Eric Burdon & The Animals $15,000 John Ford Coley: $7,500 (half of England Dan and John Ford Coley) Leon Russell: $15,000 Blood, Sweat, And Tears (David Clayton-Thomas, really): $30,000 Blue Oyster Cult: $25,000 Bo Donaldson & The Heywoods $7,000 ("Billy Don't Be A Hero") David Cassidy: $60,000 (four times Eric Burdon!) Dickey Betts: $35,000 (Allman Brothers Band) Judy Collins: $35,000 Steppenwolf: $25,000 (Just John Kay, sorry, no Mars Bonfire) Ratt: $9,000 John Michael Montgomery: $76,000 (country) America: $35,000 Animotion: $7,500 ("My Obsession") Tony Orlando: $35,000 Elliott Lurie: $5,000 (Looking Glass, who had one big hit "Brandy") I offer this only as an interesting curio and a peek into the whatever-happened-to world. And by all means, hire these guys; why not have Warrant play at your wedding? At a hundred and fifty heads, it's only $75 a pop.
Comments:
Hey Carol, nice to hear from you.
At present, I doubt I can even afford Maxine Nightingale or even the "Brandy" guy. I'm looking at the drummer from Climax Blues band, or a Deep Blue Something covers band...
Smart lady , Wendy , she adds her own website ... but please do NOT sell Maxine Nightingale that cheap miss W. Kay of Mars Talent! She is a DIVA, a real artist, and her price should be more than your lousy 5 K.
