Lists: Banned by the BBC for the F-Word
Lists, a new regular irregular feature, features music related lists of interest or enlightenment, with brief notes. ![]() Here's a list of notable songs banned by the BBC in England for containing the "F" word: John Lennon: Working Class Hero (1970) [Uses F-word twice] The Rolling Stones: Star Star (1973) [Originally titled "Starfucker", they changed the title, but kept the chorus] The Dead Kennedys: Too Drunk To Fuck (1980) [Obvious] Ian Dury: Fucking Ada (1980) [Ditto] Neil Young: Fucking up (1990) [Not so laid back after all] Black Grape: Shake Your Money (1995) [Uses F-word] Super Furry Animals: The Man Don't Give a Fuck (1996) [F-word appears over 50 times] Fatboy Slim: Fucking in Heaven (1998) [Fatboy squeezes it in 108 times] Linda McCartney: The Light Comes From Within (1999) [Of all people! Posthumous release] Toeing the Line (These artists changed lyrics to get airplay): The Stranglers: Peaches (1977) [Punk icons changed lyrics for airplay] XTC: Respectable Street (1982) [Made respectable when allusions to sexual positions, abortion, and perversion were changed] Radiohead: Creep (1992) [Edited out F-word] Prince: Sexy Motherfucker (1992) [Title change to "Sexy MF" deemed acceptable] Beautiful South: Don't Marry Her (1996) [Refrain "Don't marry her fuck me" changed to "Have me"] Not included: artists who simultaneously released "clean" and "dirty" versions; the BBC automatically played the clean ones.
Comments:
carol: Interest in F-ing? Who has the time?
stephen: Good question; I tried to find an answer but couldn't find any refernce to it having been banned by the BBC, although I may have missed it.
Cheers uao. I wandered over via the playlist on the Radish. Thanks for the research on this most infotaining subject...
Hey now, j shifty;
Post a Comment
Thanks for stopping by. j shifty has a cool blog Ribaldry and Shmaltz and knows a lot about music. Any friend of the Radish is a friend here, too. ;-) Oh! And I also have an answer for stephen, many months later: "Working Class Hero" on Broken English wasn't a single, and therefore, the issue of airplay probably could have been avoided. Not sure how many of the others were singles, but a bunch were. << Home
